Since ancient times, mountain worship has prospered in this region, and a pilgrimage through these gorgeous mountains represents a cycle of death and rebirth. WebOfficially, the three Dewa Sanzan peaks are currently Shinto, under the control of Dewa Sanzan Shrine. However, by no means was this always the case. In fact, for the majority of their history as a spiritual training ground, the Dewa Sanzan have been Buddhist. Remnants of their Buddhist history exist all over the mountains.
